Austin Texas
Not that you'll run out of things to do in Salado, Austin is only 45 minutes south of the Brambley Hedge Inn.

Austin - Our story as Texas capital began in the mid 1800s. The time brought tremendous growth to the tiny settlement formerly known as Waterloo that had been carved out of the wilderness. The 1850s saw the first building boom with the construction of the first permanent, limestone Capitol building (1853), as well as the Governor's Mansion (1856). A second building boom occurred in the 1870s with the arrival of the railroad in 1871. After a fire destroyed the limestone Capitol, the current granite Capitol was built and, after seven years, opened in 1888. At 302 feet high, it stands 14 feet taller than the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. and is the largest of the nation's statehouses.

We're not called The Live Music Capital of the World for nothing. But that's not all there is to do once the sun sets in Austin. We're home to several entertainment districts -- from the high-energy pubs and clubs of Sixth Street to the laid-back vibe of South Congress and the artistic scene on our city's east side. And of course, on any day, at almost any time, you can catch a live show at one of nearly 200 live music venues around town.

Leave some room for one-of-a-kind shopping finds, because Austin has an eclectic array of shops and boutiques. Head to South Congress, or SoCo, for unique and vintage treasures from apparel to jewelry, artwork and more. For 700,000 square feet of designer shops, try Austin's newest shopping destination, the Domain. More of a bargain hunter? The Austin area also offers outlet stores that will leave your hands full of can't-pass-up steals. Experience a few of our favorites now. They may just become yours.

A big part of Austin's culture? The great outdoors. With Hill Country vistas outside the city and Lady Bird Lake in the center of town, we come out to play as often as possible. And we think you will, too. Austin has miles of hike and bike trails, more than 200 parks and around 300 days of sunshine each year. We're host to the AT&T Marathon, with more than 5,000 participating runners from around the country. And Austin was recently named the nation's No. 1 golf destination by CNN.com.

Our artistic side is alive and well in Austin. In fact, it surrounds us. We are a creative community filled with designers, painters, sculptors, dancers, filmmakers, musicians... artists of all kinds. And the places to admire Austin art are just as varied: The nation's largest university-owned collection is exhibited at the Blanton Museum. View up-and-coming talent in our more intimate gallery settings. And for an up-close look at local artists, take our East Austin Studio Tour. You may just be inspi

Crawford Texas
Crawford Texas - Just 45 minutes north of Salado, Crawford is the hometown of President George W. Bush!

Crawford has changed quite a lot since the President and First Lady purchased their 1600 acre Prairie Chapel Ranch from the Engelbrecht family in 1999. Dubbed "The Western White House," where once the buildings were closed and boarded up, now tourists and townsfolk sip their morning coffee and stroll the sidewalks of this reborn little town.
You are welcomed into the building to shadow the steps of some of the original town's people and purchase items emblazoned with the name of it's most famous resident. On May 3, 2003 the steps of the shop were crossed by Australian Prime Minister John Howard, making him the first foreign leader to actually visit the people of Crawford in the business district. He chose to make this historic building his first stop, purchasing a "Friends and Allies" coffee mug as a gift for British Prime Minister Tony Blair's 50th Birthday.
Bush has made The Coffee Shop in nearby McGregor a tourist attraction on it's own by visiting there several times and even negotiating and going over the details of his purchase of the ranch in their back room. The Coffee Shop has since catered to the president and the press when they are in town.
President Bush may not have been born here, but he chose Crawford as his home town! That's even better!

Leon Valley - Once the Normand family farm, Leon Valley Golf Course was the first 18 hole golf course to be built between Waco and Austin. Fashioned in the style of a course in Monterey California, the native soil was "pushed up" to form the greens and common Bermuda grass planted. Water wells were dug and powered by windmills to supplement the water drawn from the nearby Leon River. The first nine holes opened near the end of 1958 and the second nine opened in 1959.

Many stories still continue to circulate about past legends playing at Leon Valley, including the late Byron Nelson. As a tribute, an autographed copy of Nelson's book is on display in the pro-shop along side items from Snead, Palmer, Lopez, Kite, and many others.
